Shark experience
The purpose of the specialty PSD (Polynesian Shark Diver) is to allow any certified diver PADI Open Water certifying at least 10 dives (experience of an encounter with sharks appreciated) to identify and recognize, describe and to argue on at least 3 shark species whose presence at the sites allows an easy and secure maximum.



Main species in French Polynesia:

  • The white tip lagoon shark
(Triaenodon obesus, Ma'o mamaru)
Adult size: 1.70 to 2.00 metres.
Shark distinguished by the end of its dorsal and the upper lob codale trimmed white. It is a shark that can be observed on the day landed on the merits, in caves or on rocky overhang often in small groups.
The white tip lagoon shark  is a species that appreciates the coasts, territory it shares with the black tips and lemon sharks. He become active mainly at night and marauding between 10 and 40 m.
Vivipare, the female gives birth to after a gestation period of 12 months, with a range of 3 to 20 small, measuring 60 to 65 inches at birth.

  • Grey reef shark
(Carcharinus amblyrhynchos, Ma'o raira)
Adult size: maximum 2.5 metres.
It is distinguished by its skin and tip perfectly grey, white belly and the posterior edge of the codale is black. This shark has a very keen who pointed out in the presence of a stimuli.
This shark is vivipare.it sexual maturity is about 7 years and the duration of pregnancy is about one year, for 1 to 6 embryos. Size from 45 to 60cm at birth.
Grouped band up to a few hundred specimen during the day (as in the Tuamotu Archipelago), grey sharks in contrast, are split up overnight, the period in which they are most active.
Somewhat curious, this shark will not hesitate to approach divers to 1 metre apart and disappeared shortly thereafter.
Stimulation in the presence of the shark food may present a real danger.
It is found mostly in the vicinity of the reef walls and outside in the passes, from the surface to 100 m depth.

  • Blacktip reef shark
(Carcharinus melanopterus, Ma'o Mauri)
Size: maximum 2 meters.
This is probably the most widespread shark in Polynesia. It is distinguished easily has its black spots at the ends of each fins.
This shark is quite apprehensive and it is considered harmless. However, in the presence of stimulation food (fish from being caught, for example), its behavior can become stressing and  the risk of bites (usually minor) becomes especially true in a group where the food frenzy can occur.
The black tip shark, viviparous, lives in a group of several dozen people. The female gives birth to a range of three or four small (approximately 40 cm), after a gestation period of eight or nine months. Small does grow by only 4 cm per year. The sexual maturity of the female lies between 0.96 m and 1.12 m, while it is between 0.90 m and 1m for the mâle.

  • Lemon shark
(Negaprion Brevirostris, Ma'o Arava)
Size: Maximum 3.5 metres.
Shark massive body yellowish brown color, easy to recognize because of its large dorsal fins of the same size and her little yellow eye to the form of lemon (hence its name). It is often found on the bottom close to the coast From the surface untill 90m.
The female is viviparous. After a gestation of 10 to 11 months, she gives birth to 1 till 14 babies about 60 cm .
This shark is not naturally aggressive toward humans. However, it is a shark who has the power, it is best not to tease him.
Like other sharks, lemon sharks willingly consumes the flesh of his fellow men. It is an active hunter of fish, shellfish, sea birds and small rays.
